Fertility Acupuncture Cardiff — Specialist Support for Your Journey to Parenthood

If you’re reading this, you’re probably going through something that’s hard to put into words. The hope, the waiting, the uncertainty, the appointments — fertility challenges touch every part of your life, and they can feel incredibly lonely, even when you have people around you who care. At AcuTŷ, we want you to know that you’re not alone, and that you’ve come to the right place.

Erik has been specialising in fertility acupuncture for over 17 years, supporting hundreds of individuals and couples in Cardiff and across South Wales. He holds a degree in applied biology, which means he brings both the depth of traditional Chinese medicine and a grounding in biological science to every consultation. This isn’t just treatment — it’s a genuine partnership with someone who understands both the science and the very human experience of trying to conceive.

AcuTŷ has more Google reviews than any other acupuncturist in Cardiff. We’re proud of that, but what it really reflects is the trust that people place in us at one of the most significant times of their lives. We don’t take that lightly.

How does acupuncture support natural fertility?

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to support reproductive health, and there is a growing body of modern research exploring the biological mechanisms behind it. Here’s how it may help, explained as clearly as we can:

Regulating hormones through the HPG axis

Your reproductive hormones — oestrogen, progesterone, FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), and LH (luteinizing hormone) — are governed by a feedback system in the body called the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. When this system is working well, ovulation happens regularly and the conditions for conception are in place. When it’s disrupted — by stress, illness, weight changes, or simply how your body is wired — it can affect your cycle and your fertility in significant ways. Research suggests that acupuncture may influence the HPG axis by stimulating the release of beta-endorphins, which affect the secretion of GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) from the hypothalamus — essentially helping to recalibrate the body’s hormonal signalling from the top down. With 17 years of experience and a background in applied biology, Erik understands these mechanisms deeply and tailors every treatment to where you are in your cycle.

Improving blood flow to the reproductive organs

Good circulation to the uterus and ovaries is fundamental to healthy fertility. The uterus needs a rich blood supply to build a healthy endometrial lining — the environment in which an embryo will hopefully implant and grow. The ovaries need good blood flow to develop healthy follicles and produce eggs of good quality. Acupuncture is well established for its ability to improve peripheral circulation, and research has specifically shown it can increase uterine artery blood flow. For women with a thin endometrial lining or who have been told their ovarian blood flow is reduced, this is one of the most directly relevant ways acupuncture may help.

Reducing stress and cortisol — because it matters more than people realise

We know that telling someone trying to conceive to ‘just relax’ is one of the most unhelpful things you can say — and we would never say it. But the biology of stress and fertility is real and important. Elevated cortisol — your primary stress hormone — can suppress the HPG axis, disrupt ovulation, and reduce progesterone levels in the luteal phase. The fertility journey itself creates stress, and that stress can in turn affect fertility. Acupuncture is one of the most effective tools available for activating the parasympathetic nervous system — the body’s ‘rest and restore’ state — and bringing cortisol levels down. Most of our patients tell us that their acupuncture session is the one hour in their week where they genuinely switch off. That matters, and not just for their wellbeing.

Supporting regular ovulation and menstrual cycle health

A regular, healthy menstrual cycle is the foundation of natural fertility. But many of the women who come to us are dealing with irregular cycles, cycles where ovulation isn’t happening reliably, short luteal phases that don’t give a fertilised egg enough time to implant, or periods that are painful, heavy, or absent. Acupuncture may help regulate the hormonal signals that govern the menstrual cycle, supporting more consistent and timely ovulation. Over a course of treatment, many of our patients notice meaningful improvements in their cycle — more predictability, better luteal phase length, and a reduction in symptoms that had been affecting their quality of life.

Conditions we commonly support

Every person who walks through our door is different, and we always start with a thorough consultation to understand your individual situation. That said, these are some of the conditions we work with most frequently:

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

PCOS is one of the most common causes of female infertility, affecting roughly one in ten women of reproductive age. It can cause irregular or absent periods, disrupted ovulation, elevated androgens, and insulin resistance — all of which affect fertility. We know how frustrating PCOS can be to live with, and how much misinformation there is out there about it. Acupuncture may help by supporting more regular ovulation, reducing androgen levels, and improving insulin sensitivity. A 2023 scoping review identified PCOS as one of the most active areas of current fertility acupuncture research, and the evidence here is genuinely encouraging.

Unexplained infertility

Being told your fertility tests are ‘normal’ but you still can’t conceive is one of the most confusing and demoralising experiences imaginable. It can feel like there’s nothing to fix and nowhere to start. Acupuncture offers a whole-body approach that doesn’t require a specific diagnosis — it works to optimise hormonal balance, blood flow, stress response, and cycle regularity simultaneously. Many of our patients with unexplained infertility find that acupuncture gives them something positive and constructive to do, as well as genuine clinical support.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis affects roughly one in ten women and can have a significant impact on fertility — through inflammation, adhesions, and disruption to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus. It is also often deeply painful, and that pain takes a toll. Acupuncture may help by reducing inflammation, managing pain, and supporting hormonal balance in women whose fertility is affected by endometriosis. We understand how complex endometriosis is, and we work carefully and collaboratively with our patients to offer the most appropriate support for their specific situation.

Recurrent miscarriage

Losing a pregnancy — once, or more than once — is a grief that many people carry very quietly. It’s one of the areas of fertility care where emotional support matters every bit as much as clinical treatment, and we approach it with the sensitivity it deserves. Acupuncture may help support luteal phase progesterone levels and uterine blood flow, both of which are relevant to early pregnancy maintenance. We also work alongside Aileen of Connected Counselling Cardiff, who offers specialist counselling for people navigating pregnancy loss.

Poor ovarian reserve / low AMH

Receiving a diagnosis of diminished ovarian reserve or low AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) can feel like a door closing. We want to say, gently but honestly, that it isn’t necessarily so. While acupuncture cannot reverse the number of eggs remaining, it may help optimise the quality of those eggs by improving ovarian blood flow and reducing oxidative stress — both of which are relevant to egg health. Every egg counts, and supporting the best possible environment for those eggs matters.

Male factor infertility

Fertility is never just one person’s journey, and male factor infertility accounts for around half of all cases where a couple is struggling to conceive. Sperm health — count, motility, morphology, and DNA integrity — can be influenced by many of the same factors that affect female fertility: stress, circulation, hormonal balance, and lifestyle. Acupuncture has a growing evidence base for improving sperm parameters, and we actively encourage both partners to be involved in treatment where possible. Coming together as a couple to address fertility is not just clinically sensible — it can also ease some of the emotional weight that often falls disproportionately on one person.

What to expect from treatment

Your first appointment with Erik will always begin with a thorough consultation — taking the time to understand your full history, your cycle, your lifestyle, and what you’ve already been through. Acupuncture isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment, and the approach we take for someone with PCOS will look quite different to the approach for someone with unexplained infertility or recurrent miscarriage. Treatment is typically weekly, and we’d usually suggest allowing 8–12 weeks to see meaningful results — though many patients notice changes in their cycle within the first few sessions. We’re always honest about timescales and what’s realistic for your individual situation.

We also work in partnership with Aileen of Connected Counselling Cardiff, who offers specialist support for people navigating the emotional dimensions of fertility challenges. Sometimes talking is just as important as treatment, and knowing you have both available in one place is something our patients tell us they really value.

The research — what the evidence says

We believe in being completely transparent about the evidence. Research into acupuncture and fertility is growing rapidly, and while the picture isn’t yet complete, there is genuine and encouraging science behind what we do. Here are eight current, peer-reviewed studies you can read for yourself:

  • Acupuncture as treatment for female infertility — systematic review and meta-analysis (2022). A rigorous review of randomised controlled trials involving 7,676 participants found meaningful benefits of acupuncture for female infertility outcomes including live birth rate, clinical pregnancy rate, and implantation rate. Read the study
  • Acupuncture and herbal medicine for female infertility — overview of systematic reviews (2021). This comprehensive overview of 21 systematic reviews found that acupuncture was effective in controlling anxiety in infertile women, and showed significant effects on clinical pregnancy rates in women with PCOS undergoing treatment. Read the study
  • Trends in acupuncture for infertility — scoping review and bibliometric analysis (2024). A review of 310 clinical studies found that acupuncture resulted in a significantly higher pregnancy rate compared with no treatment, and identified PCOS, ovulation disorders, and male infertility as the most active current research areas. Read the study
  • Overview of systematic reviews of acupuncture for IVF — re-meta-analysis (2021). This landmark overview analysed 312 randomised controlled trials involving 65,388 participants and found that acupuncture appeared beneficial in increasing clinical pregnancy rates. Read the study
  • Acupuncture for PCOS — Cochrane Database systematic review. This Cochrane review specifically examined acupuncture for polycystic ovary syndrome and found evidence that acupuncture may improve menstrual regularity and hormone profiles in women with PCOS. Read the study
  • The efficacy and mechanism of acupuncture for male infertility — literature review (2022). This review of clinical trials found that acupuncture or acupuncture combined with another intervention was effective in improving semen quality across 12 randomised controlled trials with 1,088 participants. Read the study
  • Effect of complementary and alternative medicine on male infertility — umbrella review (2023). A review of 11 systematic reviews spanning 2014–2023 found that acupuncture showed potential for improving sperm motility and concentration in men with infertility. Read the study
  • Timing and dose effect of acupuncture on pregnancy outcomes for IVF — meta-analysis (2024). This up-to-date meta-analysis of 38 randomised controlled trials found that acupuncture timing and dosage are crucial factors in supporting IVF outcomes, with strong results for acupuncture before frozen embryo transfer. Read the study

As with all complementary therapies, more research is always being done, and we’ll always be honest with you about what the evidence does and doesn’t show. What we can say with confidence is that acupuncture is safe, gentle, and for many of our patients, genuinely transformative — not just for their fertility, but for how they feel throughout one of the most challenging periods of their lives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fertility Acupuncture

Can acupuncture help fertility?

Acupuncture may support fertility in several ways. Research suggests it may help by influencing hormonal signalling, improving blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, supporting regular ovulation, and reducing the physiological effects of stress. It is not a guarantee of pregnancy, but for many people it can be a valuable part of a wider fertility support plan.

How does fertility acupuncture work?

From a modern medical perspective, acupuncture is thought to affect the nervous system, blood flow, and hormone regulation. In fertility care, this may include supporting the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, improving uterine and ovarian circulation, reducing cortisol, and helping to regulate the menstrual cycle. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, treatment aims to restore balance in the body and support healthy reproductive function.

How long does it take for fertility acupuncture to work?

This varies from person to person. In general, we usually suggest allowing around 8 to 12 weeks of regular treatment to see meaningful changes, although some patients notice improvements in their cycle, symptoms, or general wellbeing much sooner. Fertility is rarely something that changes overnight, so a little consistency is usually important.

How often should I have treatment?

For most people, treatment is usually weekly to begin with. This allows us to support the menstrual cycle consistently and make adjustments as your body responds. In some situations, appointments may be timed more specifically around ovulation, embryo transfer, or other key points in your cycle.

When is the best time in my cycle to start acupuncture?

You can start at any point in your cycle. Ideally, the earlier you begin, the more opportunity there is to support ovulation, hormone balance, endometrial development, and stress regulation over time. That said, it is never “too late” to begin, and treatment can still be tailored to where you are right now.

Can acupuncture help if my periods are irregular?

Yes, it may help. Irregular cycles can reflect disrupted ovulation or hormonal imbalance, and acupuncture may support the hormonal signalling involved in creating a more regular, predictable cycle. Many patients seek treatment for irregular periods, absent periods, or inconsistent ovulation as part of their fertility journey.

Can acupuncture help with ovulation?

It may do. Acupuncture is often used to support more regular ovulation by helping regulate the hormonal pathways involved in the menstrual cycle. This can be particularly relevant for women with irregular cycles, ovulatory dysfunction, or conditions such as PCOS.

Can acupuncture help with PCOS?

Many women with PCOS seek acupuncture to support cycle regulation, ovulation, and overall reproductive health. Research in this area is growing, and acupuncture may help by supporting hormone balance, reducing stress, and improving insulin sensitivity in some cases. Treatment is always tailored to the individual, because PCOS can present very differently from one person to another.

Can acupuncture help with endometriosis-related fertility problems?

Endometriosis can affect fertility in several ways, including through inflammation, pain, adhesions, and disruption to the reproductive environment. Acupuncture may help support fertility in women with endometriosis by helping manage pain, reducing stress, and supporting hormonal balance and circulation. It is not a substitute for medical care, but it can be a useful part of a broader support strategy.

Can acupuncture help with unexplained infertility?

Yes, this is one of the common reasons people come for treatment. When tests come back “normal” but pregnancy still isn’t happening, it can feel especially frustrating. Acupuncture offers a way of supporting several fertility-related systems at once, including cycle health, blood flow, stress response, and hormone regulation, even where there is no single clear diagnosis.

Can acupuncture help after miscarriage or recurrent miscarriage?

Acupuncture is sometimes used as part of a supportive plan after miscarriage, particularly where there are concerns about cycle recovery, stress, luteal phase support, or uterine blood flow. Recurrent miscarriage is always something that should be medically investigated, but acupuncture may play a supportive role alongside appropriate care. We approach this area with particular sensitivity and care.

Can acupuncture help with low AMH or poor ovarian reserve?

Acupuncture cannot increase the number of eggs remaining, and we are always honest about that. What it may help with is supporting the healthiest possible environment for the eggs that are available, including ovarian blood flow, stress reduction, and overall reproductive health. For many women, that feels like a constructive and worthwhile part of their plan.

Can acupuncture improve egg quality?

Egg quality is influenced by many factors, including age, oxidative stress, circulation, hormonal environment, and general health. Acupuncture may help support some of those underlying factors, particularly blood flow and stress regulation. It should be seen as supportive rather than a guaranteed way to change egg quality.

Can acupuncture help with thin endometrial lining?

It may help in some cases. One of the proposed mechanisms of fertility acupuncture is improved uterine blood flow, which is relevant to endometrial development. For women who have been told they have a thin lining, this can be one of the most directly relevant reasons for treatment.

Can acupuncture help male fertility?

Yes, acupuncture is not just for women. Male factor infertility plays a role in a large proportion of fertility cases, and acupuncture is sometimes used to support sperm count, motility, morphology, and general reproductive health. We often encourage both partners to think about fertility as a shared journey where both people may benefit from support.

Is acupuncture safe when trying to conceive?

Yes, when practised by a properly trained acupuncturist, acupuncture is generally very safe. Treatment is adapted carefully to where you are in your cycle and your specific fertility situation. We always take a full history first and tailor treatment accordingly.

Is acupuncture safe in early pregnancy?

It can be, but treatment in early pregnancy needs to be approached appropriately and with care. If you think you may be pregnant, or you have recently had a positive pregnancy test, it is important to let us know so treatment can be adjusted accordingly.
